Country Of Origin Labeling of agricultural products,
first proposed in 2001, should be in effect throughout the USA by
September30th.
It covers fresh and frozen beef, pork, lamb, fish, shellfish,
perishable produce and peanuts. Fortunately for agricultural
producers, most of the rather high cost is borne by the distribution
system.
It has been difficult to clarify the legislation,
including the record keeping requirements. Fortunately (again) for
producers, those who have been in full compliance with U.S. import
regulations, including the Bioterrorism Act, should already be doing
most of what COOL requires that them to
do.
