The Shrinking Dollar

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This morning it took $1.50 to buy a Euro.  Many exporters in countries whose currencies are not tied to the dollar, and therefore do not fall with it, are trying to divert sales to nations with strong currencies.  This is most evident in major exporting countries, like Brazil, and for products not made from inputs that are paid for in dollars.
One bright spot for exporters to the U.S. is that it now costs less, in their currencies, for activities such as market research and setting up U.S. sales offices.
Country Of Origin Labeling of agricultural products, first proposed in 2001, should be in effect throughout the USA by September30th.  It covers fresh and frozen beef, pork, lamb, fish, shellfish, perishable produce and peanuts.  Fortunately for agricultural producers, most of the rather high cost is borne by the distribution system.
It has been difficult to clarify the legislation, including the record keeping requirements.  Fortunately (again) for producers, those who have been in full compliance with U.S. import regulations, including the Bioterrorism Act, should already be doing most of what COOL requires that them to do.
Plans and Solutions Activities
Book and Seminars:  Publication of the forth edition of Building an Import/ Export Business, in January, has led to several requests to conduct seminars for community colleges and economic development corporations.
D.C. - Area Market:  We recently completed a survey of markets in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia for some 15 food and beverage products from the beautiful country of Chile.  Most of the products studied have excellent potential.
D.R. Trade Platform:  We are now implementing an Export Platform for the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in the Dominican Republic.  This major project will culminate with a trade mission by 15 Dominican companies to the New York area from April 7-11.
